RayWheeler,NASA’sleadscientistforadvancedlifesupportactivitiesatKennedySpaceCenterinFloridaalsosaidfreshfoodssuchastomatoes,blueberriesandredlettucecouldhaveapositiveimpactonpeople’smoodsandalsocouldprovidesomeprotectionagainstradiationinspace.
Theredromainelettucewasgrowninaspecialplant-growingboxcalledaVeggieunitthatwasbuiltbyOrbitalTechnologiesCorporationinMadison,Wisconsin,andwasflowntospaceaboardtheSpace-XDragoncargoship.Theseedsarecontainedinrootingpillows,whichcomecompletewithsoilandfertilizer.Sincewatercannotbepouredinspace,aspecialirrigationsystemdeliversmoisturetotheplantpillowsfrombelow.
Theseedswere“activated”byScottonJuly8andgrewfor33days.OnMonday,Lindgrenusedtongstoharvestthelettucefromitsgrowingbox,beforeattachingtheleavescarefullytoatray.Hecleanedthemandhandedthem,inafood-safebag,toScottandJapaneseastronautKimiyaYui.TheysavedacoupleofleavesforRussiancosmonautsMikhailKornienkoandGennadyPadalka,whowereoutsidethestationdoingaspacewalk.
