Teaching has always been a process of helping others to discover?“new” ideas and?“new” ways of organizing what learned. Whether this process took place though systematic teaching and testing, or whether it has through a discovery approach, testing was, and remains, an integral part of teaching.This article discusses ways by which teaching and testing can be integrated. Just as there is no?“best” teaching method, neither is there only one best approach to testing. The discusses the use of tests as an instructional tool, the use of tests as an administrative tool, teachers attitudes towards testing, and teacher competency with regard to testing.The term?“test” is viewed here, as any of a variety of techniques that can capture what a person knows in response to a question. This includes standardized tests of achievement and aptitude. Less formal paper-and-pencil tests, performance tests, and what the like tests, whatever form they take, require a response that is considered?“correct” measure of attitude, personality, and interest would not fall under this definition.II. The Relationship Between Testing and TeachingA. Testing and Teaching are not Separate EntitiesLanguage testing and language teaching? learning are essential components of language education. They have a potent mutual influence. They supplement and complement each other to bring out the best in each other in the process of language teaching and learning. Davies?(1968:5) say that?“a good test is an obedient servant since it follows and apes the teaching.”1 Arthur Hughes?(2000:2) also states that?“ the proper relationship between them is surely that of partnership.”2 Without saying both language testing and language teaching are so closely interrelated that neither of them can work well without the other.Testing and teaching? learning are inseparable.
