What other sources of meaning do we use in interpersonal communication? How reliable are they? What does the proverb “Silence is gold and speech is silver” mean? Does it describe the reality around you? Explanation: Man’s unique gift of interacting with each other is manifested in his ability to communicate not only by what is said but also by what is not said among interactants. Although people may not be aware of this communicative function of the absence of speech, silence communicates just as intensely and eloquently as anything verbal and very often the silent message is the most meaningful. The English sayings “Speech is silver, silence is gold” and “Actions speak louder than words” reflect the recognition of the significance of silence. Similarly in Chinese we have “Silence speaks louder than words” and “Silence is gold”. However, in practice, the voiced channel and unvoiced channel are viewed differently. People in different cultures often adopt different attitudes toward speaking and not speaking. Such diversities could be serious hindrances to successful intercultural communication. 跨文化交际 * Introduction The focus of this lecture is the relationship between language and cultural and Hall’s High- context and low-context communication. Language is one of the most important differences between many cultures, and one of the greatest barriers. Differences in language make intercultural interactions difficult. Even if a person is fluent in a language, severe mistakes can still occur.
