IntroductionThe ultimate goal of foreign language teaching is to enable the students to use the foreign language in work or life when necessary. The primary goal of foreign language learning is to develop the ability to use real and appropriate language to communicate and interact with others. However, the present practice in the English language teaching classroom in China could not provide satisfactory conditions for both teachers and students to achieve the goals.?At present, most of teachers use spoon-feeding teaching method, instead of creating situational teaching. And students are in passive learning situation and neglect to cultivate intercultural awareness. The students are lack of communicative skills and can not use English in life freely. In addition, it is difficult to cultivate and enhance students’ cultural awareness although they have well realized the existing differences because they often unconsciously attempt to superimpose their native culture onto the target language, which greatly hinder an effective intercultural communication.Role-play provides students with opportunities to make use of the language they have learned, to share information, to act out difficult situations, to search for solutions, and to communicate feelings in a comparatively authentic environment. More importantly, it helps illustrate the occasion in which the subtle cultural differences through teachers’ classroom presentations.II. The Concepts of Role-playA. The Origin of Role-playRole-play and social drama are derived from psychological drama, since the creation of psychological drama by psychologist Moreno, role-play has become a group counseling, as well as important technology in teaching.
