IntroductionA society is a complex organic whole in which its members interact and communicate with one another according to certain rules. Some of the rules are clearly defined on paper, while others are buried in people’s mind. Whether they are clear or not, they do exist and people have to follow them in their daily life. These rules are known as the customs of a society. It’s been noticed that in interaction and communication people firmly observe these guidelines without trying to find out why they are as they are and how they have evolved, but it does not follow that social customs are not reasonable or valuable. Communication can bring people together, but culture keeps them apart. With China entry the WTO and will hold the Olympic Games in 2008, the relationship between China and Western in politics, economy, culture will become more and more close. It is undoubtedly that the etiquette will play an important role in this process.?So this thesis aims at leading readers, though comparison, to a deeper understanding of one aspect of the complexities of intercultural communication and providing them with a cultural perspective in dealing with common problems in intercultural communication and providing them with a cultural perspective in dealing with the common problems in intercultural communication.?In other words, it is intended to help readers develop communicative competence by bringing them to one facet of the communication process from a cultural perspective?????????????????????????????????????????????????–the differences in social etiquettes between Chinese and English-speaking peoples so that they can have a good beginning towards successful communication.?Ⅱ. Literature Review?There are many words about etiquettes in English. For example, courtesy which means courteous behavior and good manners which means system of rules governing formal occasions such as meetings
