People coming from different cultures may have different views on what etiquette is and how to be polite. If the communicators share a similar culture, there is very few cultural blocks between them, and the communication process tends to be successful, but communication problems will be easily caused due to the differences in their cultural background rather than grammar or lexicon knowledge. As etiquette is not only associated with the understanding of linguistic knowledge, but also with cultural knowledge. It is necessary and important for Chinese students of learning English to study the causes of differences between Chinese and English so as to maintain a harmonious atmosphere and aviod misunderstandings in cross-cultural communication.“Cross-cultural communication is the communication between members of different cultures.”1 The author intends to analyze the different etiquette standards between Chinese and English in cross-cultural communication from four parts. In the first part, the importance of studying the different standards on etiquette between Chinese and English is put forward. In the second part, the thesis describes the study of etiquette in verbal and non-verbal communication between Chinese and English from several aspects. Following them are some brief explanations of how they hinder cross-cultural communication and methods that communication participants can minimize or avoid such failures. In the third part, the author suggests some solutions to solve that problem. And in the last part, it is concluded that as people grow up under one’s own culture, it is highly necessary for communication participants to
