On Cultural Connotation and Translation of English Proverbs Abstract As a particular part of language ，proverbs are concrete fragment of wisdom results of observation and embodiments of universal truths. They are pithy ，comprehensive and full of figures of speech and serve as a mirror of the historical and cultural conceptions of a social community. Readers can enrich themselves with plentiful interesting information of other cultures by familiarizing themselves with proverbs. However, when proverbs are being translated ，translators are often confronted with difficulties such as retaining the characteristics as well as the images and national flavor of the original in translation. This thesis intends to study the translation of English proverbs. Through the studying of definition, features and functions of proverbs, the author tries to find out the relationship between English Proverbs and culture. On that basis, the author reviews several opinions on translating complicated connotation and comes to a conclusion that if we want to translate proverbs well, we must understand its culture and learn some basic translation skills ，such as literal translation、free translation 、substitution abstract、 translation transliteration and so on. Then, during translation, we can not only show the cultural connotation, but also express the original meaning, keep the national flavor and stylistic characteristics of the original in translation and make the translation go smoothly. In order to make it a vivid and convincing one ，a large number of examples，mainly excerpted from the publications mentioned in the bibliography and their different versions are also presented here.
