One of the 3 notable realists in the beginning of 20th century, Arnold Bennett(1867-1931)praised him:“he has published nothing that does not show great creative and emotional power and nothing that is not beautiful”. Even for D.H. Lawrence, showed little respect for, and always distained other writers, Tomas Hardy was the only writer he once mentioned with respect. Hardy’s greatest achievement of writing is represented in his “Novels of Characters and Environment”, among which Tess of the D’Urbervilles is include. Virginia Woolf once said,“To read Tess is to drink deep of the beauty of the earth” It is used to explore the accidents and coincidences, omens and natural environment in Tess of the D’Urbervilles, or summarized as the fatalism. In the past years, scholars have showed extreme interest in the coincidence and accidents which make Tess’s tragedy unavoidable. By doing so, most of them agreed on that Hardy indicates in the novel that human destiny is determined by a kind of circumstantial force similar yet superior to any god created by man and that human beings will have no control over his own destiny. Omens and signs are also used to add Hardy’s fatalism outlook on life. Hardy’s fatalism is also embodied in the form of nature, nature of the world and nature of the people. We could conclude from the researches that, for Hardy, nature is the primary factor in life. Hardy’s noves present wildness both in nature and in human nature which is set against the codes and order of society. So many interests have put onto the research on the tragedy of Tess Since the novel first published. It is thought highly by the researchers that Tess of the D’Urbervilles is an elaborately mighty tragedy attained through Hardy’s superb craftsmanship. In the
