New Competition in th e Servic e Competition in the Service Economy : Th e Five Rule s of Economy Service 9 by Christian Grönroos* Swedish School of Economics, Helsinki, Finland In the Western world we are already experiencing a service society or service economy. The concept service economy or service society is used instead of the concept information economy (information society). It i s a fact that the amount of information and the access to information has increased exponentially, and continues to do so. This is not, however, a structural change in the economy, as is the growing size and importance of services. Hence, in a structural sense it is inaccurate to talk about an information economy. The concept service economy, on the other hand, expresses a real change, and therefore, we prefer to use this term. According to a frequently used definition such an economy is characterised by the fact that the major part of the gross national product is produced within the so-called service sector. Statistical data published by GATT show that in 1984 the service sector of the economy counts for, on average 58 per cent of GNP in the EEC countries, whereas the figure for the US is 6 6 per cent.
