For Christmas I prayed for him. He was a golden-haired boy and had a slim mew American nose. When I found out that my parents had invited the minister’s family over for Christmas Eve dinner, I cried. What would Robert think of our Chinese Christmas? What would he think of our noisy Chinese relatives who lacked proper American manners? What terrible disappointments would he feel upon seeing not a roasted turkey and sweet potatoes but Chinese food? On Christmas Eve I saw my mother had busied herself in creating a strange menu. The kitchen was untidy with piles of raw food: beef, fish, tofu, vegetables, and so on. The fish with its eyes swelling seemed to plead not to be thrown into the pan of hot oil. The tofu looked like white sponges. And then they arrived—the minister’s family and all my relatives. The house was soon filled with the loud confusing noise of doorbell, shouting, and talking. I saw Robert, but I pretended he did not exist. Dinner threw me deeper into despair. My relatives licked the ends of their chopsticks and reached across the table, dipping them into the dozen or so plates of food. Robert and his family waited patiently for my father to pass them the large shallow dishes. My relatives murmured with pleasure when my mother brought out the whole steamed fish. There was a strange expression on Robert’s face. Then my father stuck his chopsticks just below the fish eye and picked out the soft meat. “Amy, your favorite,” he said, offering me the tender fish cheek. At that moment I wanted to disappear instantly. At the end of the meal my father leaned back and stroked his stomach. He complimented my mother on her fine cooking in a loud voice. “It’s a polite Chinese custom to show you are satisfied,” explained my father to our astonished guests. Robert was looking down a
