What can history tell us ? In the author ’s opinion , history is only a form of exis tence of the “past ”. It is a kind of “past ”in the memory and thought of today’s people , and it takes the forms of experience , knowledge and tradition. The “past ”can exist in the form of history just because it is of signifi cance and value. Significance is the stem and value is the quality. History is the important basis on which man knows himself and examines himself . It is also the foundation for today’s people to understand the past , pre dict the future and carry out the creative activities.
