Introduction: benefits of a team management approach.This paper has been written within a paradigm that holds team work as fundamental to continuous corporate improvement. Unfortunately, much discussion of team work is, in general, based upon studies conducted within the private sector. To fill this gap, we will discuss both the characteristics and benefits of team management on an organization-wide basis, as well as examine steps that a company can take to support a team management approach throughout the organization.
In doing so, we hope to articulate the following:the best team skills; the characteristics of an effective team; the best type of team player; the reasons teams fail; the reasons teams succeed; the components of an effective team. As a means of introduction, we will first discuss some of the more tangible benefits of team management. For the organization, perhaps the single greatest benefit of adopting a system of team management can be understood in terms of the increased potential that is bestowed upon the team-member because of his or her affiliation with the team. Membership of a team not only changes but actually enhances both an employee’s day-to-day work activities and the end result of those efforts. An employee’s potential, i.e. the extent to which he or she can perform high-quality,meaningful work is thus extended.
Descriptions of the nature of the team can not be complete without some description of the organization behind the team. While team management practices and the responsibility of the organization’s leadership to the team are the focus of the next section, the tangible nature of the organization that supports the team will be discussed here. In short, in order for an organization to demonstrate it supports the fundamentals of team management, it must remove symbols of hierarchy and therefore status, including reserved parking, executive bathrooms, tim
