The combined mechanism of vacuum combined with surcharge preloading is discu ssed. It is not the w ay of the vacuum loading combined w ith surcharge loading but the the w ay of pore w ater pressure diff erence caused by vacuum preloading combined w ith the the pore w ater pressure diff erence cau sed by surcharge loading. The testing results show that soft foundation treated by vacuum combined w ith surcharge preloading is very eff ective.
