When and How to Teach Grammar
1 Introduction
Nowadays, more and more people believe that its not good to teach English grammar. They think that student should acquire grammatical knowledge by constant exposure to English. So teachers today avoid mentioning grammar in class for they think that teaching grammar is outdated. Students may take part in all kinds of activities in class and they may know how to use some sentence patterns without knowing why. Its true that we put too much emphasis on grammatical-translation approach in the past, while now we neglect this approach to a large degree. Neither of the doings is ideal. In fact grammar teaching plays an important role in English teaching. The point is when and how to teach grammar. Through Professor Li Guanyis article and my own learning experience, I believe that grammar should be taught at the foundational phase of English learning and all the usages should be taught by using.
2 The Importance of Grammar
Lets compare English to a tree. Grammar could be the trunk and branches while words and phrases could be the leaves. Without a trunk there could be a heap of leaves but never a tree. We learn a foreign language in order to be able to read and write, listen and speak. If we dont learn the grammar, we cant understand a passage just by knowing the meaning of the words. If we cant read, how can we write? Its the same with listening and speaking. Just as a famous saying goes, nothing that has not been read can be written, and nothing that has not been heard can be spoken.
