ADVANCES IN ATMoSPHERIC SCIENCES，V0L．27．N0．5．2010，1210—1220 IndicesofElN ifioand ElN ifioM odoki An Improved E1N ifioM odokiIndex LIGen(李根)，RENBaohua (任保华)，YANGChengyun(杨成昀)，andZHENGJianqiu(郑建秋) SchoolofEarthandSpaceSciences，UniversityofScienceandTechnologyo／China，Hefei230026 (Received10October2009；revised23December2009) ABSTRACT Inrecentyears，ElNifioModoki(atypeofpseudo—ElNifio)hasbeendistinguishedasaunique1arge— scaleocean warming phenomenon happening in thecentraltropicalPacificthat isquite difierentfrom thetraditionalElNifio． In thisstudy．EOF analysiswasused to successfully separate ElNifio and El NifioModoki．TheabilitiesoftheNIN03index．NINO3．4 index，NINO1+2 index andNIN04 index in characterizingElNifiowereexplored in detail．Theresultingsuggestion wasthat comparatively,NIN03 istheoptimalindex formonitoring ElNifio among thefourNIN0 indices．astheother NINO indices wereofund tobelessgood atdistingui8hingbetweenElNifio and ElNifio Modokisignals，orwereeasily disturbedbyElNifioModokisignals．Purther，animprovedE1NifioModokiindex (IEMI)wasintroduced inthecurrentpaperto betterrepresenttheE1Nifio Modokithatiscaptured bythesecond leadingEOF modeofmonthlytropicalPacificseasurfacetemperatureanomaliesfSSTAs)．TheIEMIisanimprovement oftheElNifioModokiindexfEMI)throughadjustmentsmadetotheinappropriateweightcoeflicientsof thethreeboxesofEMI．TheIEMIthereforeovercomestheEM I’sinabilitytomonitorthetwohistoricalEl NifioModokievents，aswellasavoidsthepossiblerisk(presentintheEMI)ofexcludingtheinterferenceof theElNifiosigna1．Therealisticandpotentia1advantagesoftheIEMIareclear． Keywords：E1Nifio，E1NifioModoki，NINO3index，improvedE1NifioModokiindex(IEMI) Citation：Li，G．，B．H．Ren，C．Y．Yang，andJ．Q．Zheng，2010：IndicesofE1NifioandE1Nifio
