Research on its symbolism, characterization and feminism has been emerging in an endless stream through the ages. While what appeals the author of this paper most is Hawthorne’s ambivalent thought. This thesis aims to conduct a detailed study of Hawthorne’s ambivalent thought about religion, feminist consciousness, and marriage and love in this novel. Influenced by Puritanism and Transcendentalism, Hawthorne criticizes the Puritan life on the one hand, and accepts the then social order on the other. Simultaneously, he supports the feminist movement; while influenced by the patriarchal ideology, he does not know where the blame for women’s inferiority lies? He extols the beauty of true love, while he is also fettered by the sacred rules of Puritanism.
