Fam ily andMarket: Nonagricultural2010 5 CJS Employment in Rural China 30 Song Jing John Logan Abstract: Th is study used the 2005 Chinese G eneral Social Survey ( CGSS) to investigate nonagricu ltural emp loym ent in rural Ch ina. W ith Ch ina m oving aw ay from collective agricu lture, rural households have begun to act as the basic un it of production, w hich has allow ed som e peasants to leave their fam ily farm s and join the paid labor force or participate in the flourishing private businesses. The first m odel applied logistic regression at the individual level to estmi ate the employm ent probab ilities in agricultural versus nonagricultural sectors by m arried men versus m arriedw om en. The second m odelwas conducted at the coup le level to estmi ate the likelihood of four nonagricultural employm ent outcom es: both spouses, neither spouses, husband, or w ife. Both models confirmed positive correlations between education and nonagricu ltural emp loyment. W om en∀ s employm ent w as more responsive to the presence of grandparents and young ch ildren in the household, w ith the form er effect interacting w ith grandparents∀ ages. The m ale employm ent privilege d id not sign ificantly affect the gender division in careerw ith in the fam ily. The resu lts also ind icated that the emp loym ent patternw ithin the fam ilyw as closely related to m arket factors such as the geograph ical location of the village, the econom ic developm ental features, and the cond itions of the labor force.
