ABSTRACT The morphology and microstructure of the worn surface of carbon-carbon (C/C) com-
posites, which were fabricated by CVD process and finally heat treated after 2300 , were studied using
scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscope. Most pyrolytic carbon around the
fiber is high-textured pyrolytic, and there is a 1 µm thick low-textured pyrolytic intergrade layer between
the fiber and the high-textured pyrolytic. The wear tests were simulating the normal landing of aircraft
braking. The results showed that a compacted low-textured pyrolytic carbon friction film which is about
1 µm thick covered the worn surface after the wear tests.
