Abstract: Strea is the basic co ponentunit of terrestrialwater environ ent and their ecological conditions are i portant for sustainable functions in natural syste s. For the develop entof a sustainable river syste the ecologicalconditionswere investigated alongHuaijiuheRiver nearBeijing, which is part of thewater conservation district ofHuairou Reservoir. For the ecological assess ent a Channel-Wetland-Riparian Index ( CWRI) were applied. The index co pares the natural conditions ofthe investigated strea to be reference sites, and evaluates the near-naturaldegree of structure and functionsof degraded strea ecosyste swhich is disturbedby hu an activitiesor sudden naturalchanges. CWRI isbasedon twenty-wt o quantitative indicators and thirteen qualitative indicators including ecologica,l hydrological and geographical aspects.
