CHINESEJ0URNAL0FMECHANICALENGNI EERING Vo1．23，No．1，2010 DOI：10．3901C／JME．2010．01．053．availableonlineatwww．cjmenet．com；www．cjmenet．com．cn ExperimentalResearchonSalt—outParticleMotionandConcentration DistributioninaVortexPumpVolute GAO Bo木andYANG M inguan SchoolofEnergyandPowerEngineering,JiangsuUniversity,Zhenjiang212013，China ReceivedFebruary22，2009；revisedSeptember9，2009 acceptedDecember15，2009；publishedelectronicallyDecember17，2009 Abstract：Thevortexpump issuitableforsaltsolutiontransportation．Butthesalt-outflow mechanism inthepump hasnotbeen understoodfully．Salt—outlayerformationandgrowthratearecloselyrelatedtocrystalparticlemotionandconcenrtationdistribution． Studyontheparticlehydrodynamiccharacteristicsinthepumpvolutebecomesakeyproblem，becausethecrystalparticlesaremainly distributinginthiszoneaftertheyenterthepmu p．PhaseDopplerparticleanalyzer(PDPA)isusedtomeasurethetwo-phaseflowfield inamodelpumpvolutetogetmoreunderstandingaboutthesalt-outphenomenon．Thecrystalparticlevelocitiesareobatinedinall threeperipheral，radialandaxialdirections．Particlesizeandparticlenmu berdensity(PND)measurementsarealsoperformedinthe experiment．Resultsarepresentedanddiscussedalongtheradialdirectionunderdifferentpmu poperatingconditions，aswellasvarious axialmeasurementpositions．Itisfoundthatparticlevelocitygradientofperipheralcomponentvarieswiththepmu pdischarge．Th ereis aturningpointofrelationbetweenperipheralvelociyt componentanddischarge．Radialflow velociyt curveslooklikeasaddleshape andvelociyt magniutdesarechanginggreatlywiththedischarge．Thenon—equilibriumvelociyt featurebewteenliquidandsolidphase onthisdirectionisalsoremarkable．ParticlesflowintotheimpelleratradialpositionRI，andtheaxialvelociytcomponentincreasesin thisregion．Theparticlesi
