We band about 1400 birds a year at the three colonies and find about 20% of them over time. Non breeding birds don’t always return to the colony, so we may not see them again until they are ready to make their own nest and raise chicks. Sometimes 5 years. This is messy work. Most of the parents have left by this time, in the pictures you can see only a very few adults. The colony is full of mud and guano and the birds are dirty. We have to kneel in the mud to catch the squawking chicks, and they frequently poop on us when we hold them. We select the stronger larger ones in the hopes they will survive to be seen again as adults. Cleaning the tray is a very messy job. The rocks have to be washed, and the guano which is about an inch thick must be scrapped off and bagged. We then take it to the lab and wash it a few more times before looking for the otoliths using the stereoscope. We set out the tray where we think the penguins will build their nests. In this case we were lucky, two nests were made which generated plenty of guano for the study. The screen is very fine and will let water and silt particles through but not the otoliths. This is a small otolith, most are larger, but still require a scope to find them. Each fish species has a different shape bone and the otoliths grow by layers as the fish grows. Like tree rings. This is similar to the tag placed inside pets for ID if the pet is lost. The computer subtracts the two weights to get the amount of food fed to the chicks and records how long the penguin was out foraging( looking for food. This way we can total how much food it takes to raise a chick. We attach these to the birds at the end of the season and need to find this bird again in the spring, hoping it returns the same colony and close to the same nesting site. Otherwise we have no data and no device. We select birds that are raising chicks and in good health so we know they will return to the nesting site and bring the recorder back. It is easy
