Abstract: Them ixed assembly line balancing problem considered here is tom inmi ize the number ofwork-
stations given the cycle tmi e. A smi ulation-basedm ethod is presented to solve this problem. By thismeth-
od, analyticalmodels are developed form inmi izing both averageworkload and instantaneousworkload of
each station. enetic algorithm is used to solve the optmi ization problem. The optmi ization algorithm is em-
bedded into a smi ulation system such thata satisfactory solution can be obtained. Techniques are presented
to speed the computation. An illustrative example verifies the effectiveness of the proposed method.
