Accurately and quickly measuring the sound speed in seawater can provide the real sound speed data for the underwater acoustic system like fathometer and sonar quickly, effectively and conveniently, it also provides the important ocean environmental parameters. Therefore, developing the measurement method in getting more effective and accurate seawater sound speed is of important. At the first place of the paper, it introduces the seawater velocity measurement method’s research background, research history and current research at home and abroad. Then, it enumerates some specific seawater velocity measurement methods, according to which we can directly or indirectly measure seawater speed, so we divide them into direct measurement and indirect measurement. Direct measurement means using water’ temperature, salinity, depth date and by means of seawater empirical formula calculate seawater velocity. Therefore, the paper introduces the source and development, the application constraints, the measurement accuracy of some different seawater empirical formulas. Besides, recommends some direct measurement methods’ principle. The inversion technology of sound speed profile in the ocean is a kind of effective method of inversion of the sound speed profile in the complex and changeful marine.
