1.2 Introduction to Maurice
Maurice , a novel by E. M. Forster, is a tale of homosexual love in the early 20th
century England. Following the development of Maurice Hall from his schooldays, via
university to society, it tells a story of a young middle class man searching for his own
identity within a society hostile to homosexuality. Depicted as an ordinary man,
Maurice keeps in line with the “normal” (i.e. heterosexual) way of life at first. His real
sexual orientation is kept in muddle. His acquaintance with Clive Durham at Cambridge
leads to his emotional and sexual awakening. However, this first homosexual romance
meets a sad ending because of Clive’s decision to marry a girl of his class. Desperate of
love and life, Maurice turns to medicine for help with the hope of becoming “normal”,
but fails. However, Alec Scudder, the gamekeeper on Clives country estate saves him
out of the dreadful situation. Lifting shackles of social conventions, they flee to the
green wood to live a free life ever after.
Finished in 1914 and revised in 1959-1960, the novel is remarkable for its time in
describing same-sex love in a non-condemnatory way. Considering the public and legal
attitudes to homosexuality at that time, Forster was quite aware that his insistence on a
happy ending would make the book too controversial. Most probably it would be
banned because of the rigid censorship. A note found on the manuscript reflected his
worry about the response from the critics and society, which read Publishable, but
worth it?” Finally, he resisted publication. Although shown to selected friends, the
novel was only published in 1971 after Forsters death. However, by the time he di
