New York New York is made up of five separate counties, which are called boroughs: Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx and Staten Island. Although Manhattan is the smallest of the five boroughs of New York City, it is the glittering heart of the metropolis. It is the site of virtually all of the hundreds of skyscrapers that are the symbol of the city. Empire State Building Empire State Building is located on 5th Avenue in New York City. It stands 381 m high. When it was completed in 1931, it was the tallest building in the world. Although it no longer holds that distinction, it is still regarded as the ultimate American skyscraper. Empire State Building consists of 102 stories of office space and public viewing platforms. United Nations Headquarters In 1945 the United States Congress invited the United Nations (UN) to establish its permanent headquarters in the United States. Completed in 1952, the UN complex sits in Manhattan, alongside the East River, in the city of New York. Under the UN’s agreement with the United States, the site of the UN headquarters is exempt from local laws. Central Park Central Park in New York City was designed by Frederick Law Olmstead and Calvert Vaux in the 1850s. It was so popular that it inspired a series of similar metropolitan parks all over the United States. The park covers 341 hectares of Manhattan Island, and houses the Central Park Zoo and Wildlife Center and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The park also hosts many outdoor concerts and events each year. Times Square Dazzling neon signs and billboards light up Times Square at night. The square is home to New York City’s famous Broadway theater district. Broadway Theater District The billboard of the Winter Garden Theater on the Avenue of the Americas in New York City advertises the Broadway show Cats.
