When BNIP3 over-expressed, the vast majority of them are located in the mitochondrial outer membrane. Although many other proteins may induce cell mitophagy or apoptosis more efficiently than BNIP3, the ability of BNIP3 associating mitophagy with apoptosis and ultimately affecting the fates of cell makes it more significance than other single promote mitophagy or apoptosis protein. Here we review the role of BNIP3 in mitophagy and apoptosis of the tumor, and discuss potential mechanisms by which they may function.
