08师范2班 温庆婷 Communicative Language Teaching and English Teaching 交际教学法与英语教学 【Abstract】 This paper briefly analyzed the current situation of CLT in China. Combining my teaching experience into the theory and digging into some advantages and limitations of CLT applications in Chinese education. Then discussed how we can teach English more effectively in a CLT way. 【Key words】 Communicative Language Teaching; English teaching; teaching reform 1. Introduction With the development of Communicative Language Teaching (CLT), the new teaching approach has been introduced in China for more than ten years. The government made an immense effect to popularize it in English language teaching; try to improve the learners’ communicative competence. Yet, there is an argument in the academe: Are CLT suit for all of the countries? China has its own culture and forms its special teaching method during the long history. Many linguistic experts have a viewpoint that?different methods suit different teachers and students in different context”(Liao, 2004). It is no doubt that CLT is a beneficial approach for English learning and teaching. We must make clear that when we accept a new teaching method from other countries, we should focus on “how to teach rather than what to teach” (Littlewood, 1981). 2. What is Communicative Language Teaching CLT dates from the late 1960s? It is a kind of approach on teaching foreign language. In the teaching process, teachers should pay attention to the aspects of language not only structurally but also functionally (William Littlewood). Because “language is interaction; it is interpersonal activity and has a clear relationship with society.” (Margie S. Berns). The purpose of CLT is to train the learners’ communicative ability which helps them to communicate socially. CLT is an innovation in language teaching, because it is not based on a grammar systematic analysis, but based on a learner - centered method (Liao, 2000). And CLT is not a single and fixed te
