It has been found that most metal honeycombs of different dimensions produced by Hexcel Corporation will undergo elastoplastic buckling when the sandwich panel is subjected to out ofplane compression. Based on a representative unit cell for two dimensional honey comb structures, an elastoplastic buckling model was established and the explicit formula for critical buckling stress was obtained. The formula is the function of geometrical parameters of the honeycomb and the mechanical properties of base material. A single parameter was used to characterize the elastoplastic buckling behavior of metal honeycomb structure. T he influence of the relative density and the opening an gles of honeycomb structure on its elastioplastic buckling was also discussed. A comparison of the predic ted results by the present model and by existing models with available experiments indicates that the pres ent model is applicable.
