Mobile Communications Chapter 7: Wireless LANs • Characteristics • IEEE 802.11 – PHY – MAC – Roaming – .11a, b, g, h, i … Characteristics of wireless LANs Advantages • Flexibility: within radio coverage, nodes can communicate without further restriction • Planning: Ad-hoc networks without previous planning possible • Design: almost no wiring difficulties (e.g. historic buildings, firewalls) • Robustness: more robust against disasters like, e.g., earthquakes, fire - or users pulling a plug... • Cost: adding additional users to a wireless network will not increase the cost Characteristics of wireless LANs Disadvantages • Quality of service: typically very lower quality than wired networks due to lower bandwidth for limitations in radio transmission(1-10 Mbit/s instead of 100-1000 Mbit/s), higher error rates for interference and higher delay/delay variation for extensive error correction and detection mechanisms • proprietary solutions(专用方案): slow standardization procedures, especially for higher bit-rates, standards take their time (e.g. IEEE 802.11) • restrictions: products have to comply with many national restrictions if working wireless, it takes a very long time to establish global solutions like, e.g., IMT-2000 • Safety and security: using radio waves might interfere with other high-tech equipment, the open radio interface makes eavesdropping(窃听) much easier in WLANs than in the case of fiber optics Design goals for wireless LANs 1 • Global operation: Easy to use global, seamless and legal operation • Low power: low power for battery use, power-saving modes and power management functions • License-free operation: no special licenses needed to use the LAN • Robust transmission technology • Simplified spontaneous cooperation(简化自动协调工作): operate spontaneously after power-up • Easy to use: simple management, work on a plug-and
