Generator Principles
● A generator is an electrical machine that converts
mechanical power to electrical power
● The operation of a generator is based on
electromagnetic induction: a voltage is induced in a coil
situated in a variable magnetic field
● A generator has two mechanical parts:
■ A rotor that rotates and creates
the magnetic field
■ A stator that is stationary and
houses the coil in which the
voltage is induced

Stator
● The stator consists of the supporting frame, core and
armature windings
● The stator core is made from laminations and thin sheets
of electrical steel, which are stacked and held in place by
steel end rings and support bars
● The windings are constructed of layered and insulated
copper wire

● The rotor assembly is the revolving field. It consists of
windings in a core, which are mounted on a steel shaft.
