This is an opportunity for establishing locations, min/max levels for WIP and supplies, and proper placement markings for equipment (pallet jacks, forklifts) that moves in and out of areas. Think about the flow of the process and what the steps are, and label and number them if appropriate. “Foot printing” or taping arrows on the floor to identify the work sequence can be useful. Use silhouettes (shadows) for tool presentation, and label locations of parts. Be careful not to go overboard with this – remember that if it you can’t agree on what waste it is eliminating this sort of 2S labeling can become a waste in itself. For small inexpensive parts you can use a sample part to “make it visual”. This approach helps in identifying which container of parts you need, you can be finding what you need before you are able to read any of the labels. Shadow boards can be mobile if you don’t have a fixed work station, think about adapting them to meet the individual needs of each process. In this example the shadow board or box is on wheels and was designed to fit under the vehicle out of the way of the operator whilst he or she is working. Have parts and materials easily accessible, not in closed boxes where you can’t see the contents. In this example there are instructions on the front of the container as to how many of each part is required for the two different products, H3-45 or XLV II. A common misunderstanding about 5S is that it’s about sweeping up and cleaning. It’s not. In fact, it’s about NOT cleaning. Confusing? Here’s how it works: first, do an initial physical Sweep to make everything clean by picking up trash, sweeping the floors clean, and wiping down machines and equipment. Then, do a visual Sweep each day and notice where things are getting dirty again. Write down the reasons why, and take action to eliminate the root causes. It’s a lot better use of your
