Pride and Prejudice Mansfield Park Emma Pride and Prejudice Major character webs Jane Austen 16 December 1775 – 18 July 1817 Pride and Prejudice --- the Story Elizabeth Bennett is a strong-willed yet sensible young woman in a well-off but lower class family with five sisters, a long-suffering but loving father and a mother anxious to marry them to wealthy young gentlemen. Pride and Prejudice --- the Story As her older sister Jane falls in love with Mr. Darcys best friend Mr. Bingley, and her youngest sister Lydia flirts with anyone in a military uniform, Lizzie finds herself fighting off the attentions of Mr. Collins and quite taken by the charming Mr. Wickham - who also happens to be an enemy of Mr. Darcy. Pride and Prejudice: Chap. 1 The news that a wealthy young gentleman named Charles Bingley has rented the manor known as Netherfield Park causes a great stir in the neighboring village of Longbourn, especially in the Bennet household. Pride and Prejudice: Chap. 1 Mrs. Bennet sees Bingley’s arrival as an opportunity for one of the girls to obtain a wealthy spouse, and she therefore insists that her husband call on the new arrival immediately. The Opening Sentence This sentence also offers a miniature sketch of the entire plot, which concerns itself with the pursuit of “single men in possession of a good fortune” by various female characters. The preoccupation with socially advantageous marriage in the 19th century England society manifests itself here, because in claiming so, the narrator reveals that the reverse is also true: a single woman, whose socially prescribed options are quite limited, is in ( perhaps desperate ) want of a husband. Rhetorically speaking, the sentence is an irony. There is an ironic difference between the formal manner of the statement and the ultimate meaning of the sentence.
