A Syntactic Framework for Semantic Interpretation Intro duction AUTOSEM is a lexicon driven approach to semantic interpretation built on top of the LCFlex robust parser Rose and Lavie to app ear Its domain indep endent knowledge sources include a broad coverage English syntactic parsing grammar and a large scale lexicon built on top of the COMLEX lexicon Grishman et al and containing b oth word entries as well as idiomatic construction entries Domain sp ecic semantic knowledge is enco ded declaratively within a mean ing representation sp ecication Semantic constructor functions are compiled automatically from this sp ecication and then linked into lexical entries Thus the lexicon provides a clean inter face b etween syntactic and semantic knowledge as in the Glue Language Semantics approach Dalrymple Dalrymple et al The grammar allows the parser to assign deep syntac tic roles to constituents Based on these headargument relationships the constructor functions enforce semantic selectional restrictions and assemble meaning representation structures by com p osing the meaning representation asso ciated with the constructor function with the meaning representation of each of its arguments Thus syntactic and semantic analyses are constructed in parallel AUTOSEM rst attempts to construct analyses that satisfy b oth syntactic and semantic well formedness conditions The LCFlex parser has the ability to eciently relax syntactic constraints as needed and as allowed by its parameterized exibility settings For sentences remaining b eyond the coverage of AUTOSEMs syntactic knowledge AUTOSEMs repair stage relies entirely on semantic knowledge to comp ose the partial analyses pro duced by the parser Each semantic rep resentation built by AUTOSEMs interpretat
