教學目標:
本課程提供學生有關新興科技的知識。從專業的角度來看,這方面知識是很重要的,因為幾乎每一個研究領域(包括醫療科學,自然科學,工程,計算機,政治,社會科學和人文素養),都因為這些湧現的科技而造成很大的衝擊,而這些新興科技將以快速且根本性地來改變我們的日常生活型態,包括我們的道德觀念,若單純以知識的角度來看,科技智慧的演變與發展是在地球歷史上的第一次,它們超越了生物學領域。
提升學生的批判性思維和辯論的能力。關於新興科技帶來社會的變化及衝擊,它們是我們無法從傳統的道德觀念中可以明確地得到答案的,而學生將接受這些新話題的思維挑戰。(例如:“我要更改我的寶寶的基因”或者“我應該要被植入一個生物晶片嗎?)。他們將被要求作出決定,並必須合理解釋這些決定。要做到這一點,學生將需要去除個人情感偏見,以客觀為基礎且能提出具體證據來批判性地分析自己的道德觀點。在現代社會中,當你遇到超過一個觀點的情況時,要如何達成協議,而客觀的推理就是最重要且必備的智能技巧。??
培養學生的公開演講,報告,辯論和討論的技能。
1. Provide students with knowledge about emerging technologies. This knowledge is important from a professional perspective as almost every field of study (including the medical sciences, natural sciences, engineering, computing, politics the social sciences and humanities) will be greatly impacted by these emerging technologies, from a personal perspective as these technologies will soon radically change our everyday lives including our ethical views, and from a contemplative perspective as intelligence, for the first time in earths history, moves beyond the realm of biology.
2. Refine students critical thinking and reasoning skills. Students will be being challenged with new scenarios (such as, should I modify my babys genes, or should I get a bio-chip implanted?) in which no traditional set of ethics could provide clear guidance. They will be required to make decisions and to explain and rationalize those decisions. To do this, students will need to critically analyze their own ethical views by separating emotional biases from objective evidence-based components. Objective reasoning is the most important intellectual skill in modern society and necessary for achieving agreement in any situation where more than one opinion if held.
3. Develop students public speaking, presenting, debating and discussion skills.
