Methods Two groups of residents were seleted from Zhoushan area according to eating iodized salt or not. The concentration of iodine in salt, the level of urinary iodine and the prevalence of thyroid diseases were examined. Results The respective median urinary iodine in the two groups were 140.26 µg/L and 122.05 µg/L Z=1.77P0.05. The mean thyroid volume of iodized salt eating group was 9.54 ml, which was higher than that of non-iodized salt eating group (8.64 ml P0.05), but there was no difference in goiter prevalence between two groups (χ2=0.26P0.05). The thyroid nodules rate of iodized salt eating group was 31.97%, higher than that of non-iodized salt eating group (23.64%, P0.05). The thyroid dysfunction rate of iodized salt eating groups was 27.21%, higher than that of non-iodized salt eating group (18.37%, P0.05).
