Abstract:Thehumanbeingisfacingseriouswatershortageandenvironmentalproblems.Forthemucicipal
sewagetreatment,traditionalbiologicaltreatmentisdeficient.Ontheotherhand,ROmembranemethodhas
alreadybeenaleadingtechnologyindesalinationfield.ThefurthergrowthofROmethod,especiallyinthe
fieldsofseawaterandbrackishwaterdesalination,andwastewaterreclamation,continuestobeexpectedinhigh
growthrate.Sincewaterresourcelimitationandenergyrequirementproblem,wastewaterreclamationby
membranetechnologybecomemoreandmorepopular.
Inthefieldofmunicipalsewagereclamation,membranefoulingisthemostsignificantmatters,however,in
ordertodecreasemembranefoulingandprolongmembranelife,thelowfoulingROmembraneTMLisnewly
developed.TMLlowfoulingmembranewasdevelopedbasedonbothmaterialsmodificationandelements
configurationdesign.TMLhasalreadybeenadoptedinthefirstandsecondlargestwastewaterreclamation
plantsintheworld,andstableoperationandprovidinghighqualitywaterhavebeenaccomplished.Inthenear
future,eventhefurtherpollutedwaterwhichisdifficulttobetreatedduetofoulingisalsonecessarytobe
utilizedasaresource.Therefore,thedemandforlowfoulingmembranewillstillgetgreater.
Moreover,reasonabledesignandgoodmaintenanceoroperatingareimportantforROsystem.Forexample,
optimizationaldesignforsystemrecovey,fluxandstageratioishelptoimporveROfoulingresistance.
Biologicalcontaminationistheserioustroubleforwastewaterreclamation.So,bothselectingsuitable
disinfectantandchangingitsspeciesduringoperationareveryimportant.
