* * * * * * * L2TP version 3 is for customers that prefer a native IP network. It is the successor to the well known and deployed L2TP version 2 used in Remote Access Networks. L2TP version 2 is associated, primarily, with the transport of PPP frames across a Packet Switched Network. Examples include: Wholesale Dial and xDSL networks. Cisco’s pre-standards technology UTI (Universal Transport Interface) was used to transport other Layer 2 frames, such as Ethernet, 802.1q, and POS at high data rates. L2TP version 3 is a marriage of an optimized data plane(UTI) and a reliable control plane(L2TPv2) for the creation of an extensible L2 Transport option for IP networks. Currently, it is in the IETF standards track and should move to ratification early next year. This was coupled with an optimized 12 bytes header for high performance decapsulation.
