China ) Abstrac t: Based on the observational temperature and precipitation data of 107 stations in the upper Y angtze R iver basin during 1960 - 2008, the utilizable precipitation w as calculated by Takahashis evaporation equation and the relationship ofw ater balance. The clmi atic characteristics of utilizable precipitation in the upper Yangtze R iver basin w ere studied by m eans ofm athem atical sta tistics, the analysis of REOF andM K methods. The results show ed that the seasonal variation of utilizable precipitationw as obvi ou s in the upperY angtze R iver basin. The utilizable precipitation in the upper Y angtze R iver basin from M ay to September ap peared wt o or three centers and the centers little m oved. F rom October to Apri,l the utilizable precipitation show ed a gradual de crease from south to north. The analysis ofREOF show ed that the spatial distribution of the utilizable precipitation in the upper Yangtze R iver basinw ere abnorm al in several types: southeast, northeast, m iddle part, northw est, north and southw est in summ er half year.
