Th is paper reports two stud ies on how the use of formu laic language and that of gramm ar serve to predict L2 English learners spoken and w ritten perform ance. Resu lts show that 1) the learnersab ility to use form ulaic language is a better pred ictor of their oral and w ritten English scores than their gramm atical accuracy; that is, good language learners are good users of form ulaic sequences; and 2) there is aw ide d iscrepancy bewt een students in the ab ility to use formu laic sequences in their oral and w ritten English.
