The 33rd International Congress and Exposition on Noise Control Engineering Experimental study of elevated MRT rail noise Shing Chen Industrial Technology Research Institute, Bldg. 16, 321 Kuang Fu Road, Taiwan 300 shingchen@itri.org.tw ABSTRACT[558] The individual noise level of elevated 553 MRT trains were measured for three sites within one day operation hours. The results shows that the noise level difference is more than 10 dB(A) for the same train within one day repeated running. However, in the grounded test track, the noise level difference of the same train is within 1.7 dB(A) in a controlled running condition without any passenger in the rolling stock. A method is proposed to evaluate the insertion loss of noise barrier for the elevated MRT trains when a reference measuring point is not available according to ISO 10847. 1. INTRODUCTION When a mass rapid transit system on an elevated viaduct passes through a high population density area, e.g. Taipei city in Taiwan, the radiated noise from the elevated trains is extremely annoyed to the neighbors who live along the transit line. Especially around the curved way, the squeal noise from the wheel/rail interaction fidgets neighbors. The complaints of noise from the red line, a wheel/rail system, of Taipei Rapid Transit Company grow every year and an experimental noise control project for the elevated viaduct is on going now. In this project, five noise control steps will be implemented. And the insertion loss of each noise control method will be evaluated individually and experimentally.
