The hierarchical fuzz controller has seven inputs as queue lengths of the seven light phases, and one output as green tmi e of the selected phase. In the h ierarch ical fuzz con troller, there are s ix la ers of fuzz sub- controllers w ith tw o inputs and one out pu t. The sub- controllers in the first five la ers have identical structurew ith two inputs of queue lengths and one out pu t of comb ined queue length em plo ed as one inpu t of next la er. The sub- controller in the last la er has wt o in pu ts, comb ined queue length obtained from the fifth la er and queue length of the selected phase, and one output as green tmi e of the selected phase. Using the developed fuzz controller, the best fuzz ru le base is obtained based on real traffic data of the in tersection b em plo ing evolutionar algorithm. The perform ance of th is controller is smi ula ted and com pared w ith that of a controller that is cu rrentl being emp lo ed in the intersection. The results show that the developed fuzz controller shortens vehicle w aiting tmi e b m ore than 38% .
