A NEW DESIGN TECHNIQUE FOR PRE-STRESSED LOADS
OF A CABLE-STAYED BRIDGE

Abstract:This paper introduces a new design technique for obtaining pre-stressed loads acting on a cable-stayed bridge. We proposed the design method to design optimum cross-sections of the frame structure in order for them to average stresses under maximum combined loads. This method is extended and applied in the present paper. One of the theoretical characteristics of the technique is to minimize the sum of squares of stresses to improve the member forces throughout the structure. Another is that the group of pre-stressed loads is statistically expressed by the residual sum of squares from initial values. The optimum pre-stressed loads are mathematically treated as an extreme value in the variational problem. Also, the technique contains the eigenvalue problem in the process of solving the extreme value. The paper presents the theoretical technique, as well as the application of the technique using numerical examples.
1. INTRODUCTION
We have previously proposed the optimum design techniques for obtaining the optimum cross-sections of the frame structure and for minimizing the sum of the squares of the combined stresses under the applied loads (Ref. [1]). The optimum sections receive averaged stresses of all the applied loads and resist them because of the uniform strength of the structure. This technique gives the equivalent of an effective section in static design.
The present paper introduces the available design technique for obtaining the added-cable loads by which the member force throughout the cable-stayed bridge would be improved. These added loads are named as pre-stressed loads in the present paper.
One of the theoretical characteristics of the present paper is that the technique to minimize the sum of the squares of stresses is adopted. This will improve the member forces through the structure. Another characteristic is that the group of pre-st
