SYLLABUS – CHINESE I Grade Level: 9th Class time - 18 weeks; 90 minutes/day; 120 hours approximately Teacher: Pamela Chang 郭琳琇 Materials/Resources: Textbook – Ni Hao, v. 1 Teacher’s website – Course Description: Chinese I is designed to prepare students to meet the recommended grade level expectations in Appoquinimink World Language curriculum guidelines, which are based on standards for foreign language classes established by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. The main topics of this course include greetings and introduction, family members, numbers, colors and leisure activities. Students in this course will build a solid foundation of tonal recognition, pronunciation, reading of radicals (root words) and writing of Chinese characters with correct stroke sequence. Course Objectives: This course will introduce the fun facts of Chinese characters through calligraphy writing and picture drawing and help students to concur the fear of learning a pictographic language. Students will also experience interesting differences of tones of Mandarin Chinese language. The thematic designs and performance tasks allow students to establish a sense of achievement and to set a good start in learning Chinese language. Learner’s Profile Students will mainly use Pinyin (pronouncing the words with roman letters) to develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Hanzi – Chinese pictographic characters will be limited to basic frequent words and radicals (root words. The target proficiency will be at the level of Novice-Low to Novice-Mid in ACTFL proficiency guidelines. Expected Learning Outcome Obtain the proficiency of 150-200 Chinese fundamental words. Be proficient in Chinese Mandarin tonal recognition and speaking. Acquire socio-cultural knowledge through informal, everyday contexts. Understand basic grammar in present tense and simple questions.
