The sludge is divided into primary sludge and surplus sludge. Two calculation methods about the primary sludge are presented based on the production principle. The article puts emphasis on discussion of surplus sludge volume; and the surplus sludge is divided into biological and nonbiological. It analyzes calculation methods of biological sludge through production principle, the value and influence condition of Y and K d and the value of S e . As for the three calculation methods of nonbiological sludge, the paper points out the applica ble condition based on the formula meaning and makes clear the concept of calculation of sludge volume. Finally, various calculation methods of sludge volume are summarized w ith or without the primary sedimentation tank in municipal sewage treatment plant.
