Fracturemode andfailure causeof the connecting boltwere concluded according to the resultsofmacro andm icro observation of fracture surface, metallurgical structure exam ina tion, hardness testing and chem icalcomposition analysis. The results showedthat the failuremodeof the connecting boltwas fret ting fatigue. A gap formed on theball bearing by accident firstly, then a crack initiated and propagated from the gapwhich de creased the pretightening force of the connecting bolt and caused asymmetrical contact between the connecting bolt and the ball bearing because of local loosening. Then frettingwear and fretting fatigue fracturehappened on the connecting bolt under the ra dial cyclic load.
