He feels fine as he goes about in his daily life, stopping every few hours to drink a glass of fresh juice. “I do this twice a year,” he says of his foodless week. “Fasting gets rid of all the garbage that’s built up in my body over the pass six months, leaving me feeling fresh and full of energy.” Going without food for a full week might be a little extreme for most people, but doctors have long understood that, if done correctly, fasting can be good for your health. “Fasting is a way to give your body a chance to catch up on its work,” says Dr Nina Sheerin. “The foods we eat take time to digest, and we eat so often that the body doesn’t have enough time to get it done.” Have you ever noticed that you tend to lose your appetite when you’re sick? Sheerin and other doctors believe that’s the body’s way of telling you to stop eating, so it can focus on healing itself. But often the exact opposite happens: concerned family and friends cram us with food “to keep up our strength..” Different people have different fasting habits. Some, like Mel, go completely with solid food, while others limit themselves fruit and other easily digested foods.
