Godfrey Tsinghua University, Spring 2008 The editorial and peer review processes • (1) You send paper to the appropriate editor – check the style guide – make sure you proof-read your paper carefully • (to be covered in a later lecture) – make sure the figures are legible (the text is large enough) • (2) The editor looks through the paper and decides if the paper should be reviewed – rejected on grounds of content – rejected on grounds of language • (3) The editor sends the paper to 1 or more reviewers – speed of publication determines how many reviewers – rapid communications sometimes reviewed by the editor Scientific Writing: Lecture 5b #2 The editorial and peer review processes (cont.) • (4) The referee(s) send comments back to the editor • (5) The paper is accepted (unusual), or passed back to you with a number of questions raised by the referee • (6) You reply to the comments of the referee, make changes to the paper, and then send the information back to the editor • (7) The editor decides whether you have adequately answered the questions raised by the referees.
