Based on t he first order approximation theory of the ordinary differential equ at ions and HÊpf bifurcat ion theory, t he influence of the connect ion st if fness and dam ping coeff icient betw een cars on the HÊpf bifurcat ion speed of the train set , i. e. t he linear critical speed, is studied; the bif urcated limit cycles of the train system is also investigated. T he numerical re- sult s show th at t he crit ical hunt ing speed of t he t rain system is a litt le low er t han t hat of the single car system and t he connect ion st if fness and damping bet w een cars h ave some eff ect on t he critical speed of the t rain syst em. T he work of this paper provides an eff icient method for the hunt ing st ability analysis of the train syst em. Key words: t rain system ; HÊpf bifurcat ion ; hunting st abilit y; critical speed;
