Abstract
Translation is an important communicative tool between different languages and
cultures. Subtitles in TV series, as cultural carriers, also need the involvement of
translation. Subtitle translation has become an important field as the globalization of
economy and culture is increasingly developed in the new century and the popularity
of foreign TV series in China. Good subtitle translation can enhance the viewers‘
experience of appreciating TV series. As a new field of translation, subtitle translation
has reached certain achievements. Especially in western academia, the relevant
studies have proceeded in some width and depth in terms of strategies and quality
control of subtitle translation. However, due to lack of serious attention, the quality of
Chinese subtitle translation has been restrained by certain issues, such as the low level
of academic research, unqualified translators and so on. In theory, subtitle translation
has received little scholarly attention. In practice, the quality of film subtitle
translation is yet to be improved.
Within the framework of Skopostheorie, translation is regarded as a purposeful
action. In the course of translation, translators make a selective transfer from the
multi-information embedded in the source-text in line with the Skopos and specialties
of the viewers according to the demands of initiator. Actions must take place in a
cultural loaded place and different cultures share various customs and values; thus,
subtitle translation can be considered as an overall multicultural communication in
text, image and sound through the media of screen. The initiator defines the purpose
of translation and specifies the translation brief while the intention of other relative
