A Comparative Study on English Chinese Poetry and Their Translations 英汉语诗歌比较研究与翻译 讲授:李兰生 I. Introductory Remarks This course is intended as a compulsory course for postgraduate students majoring in the English language and English literature. With a view to making the students acquire a systematic knowledge of the makings and makers of poetry, the course offers more than ten lectures on the following topics: 1. What Is Poetry Both in English and Chinese Cultural Context 2. A General Survey of the Poetic/Artistic Features of English Poetry 3. A General Survey of the Poetic/Artistic Features of Chinese Poetry Ci included 4. A Brief Look at the History of English Poetry 5. A Brief Look at the History of Chinese Poetry 6. Types of Poetry 7. Themes of Poetry 8. Prosody 9. Relation Studies: Poetry and Philosophy, Poetry and Art, Poetry and Music, etc 10. Methodology of Comparative Studies 11. Translation of Poetry 12. Comparative Poetics: Literary Theory in Intercultural Context We plan to assign about 4 lecture hours to each topic, which should go with discussions and requires the students’ active participation. Therefore, we will bring the course to an end within 48 hours, leaving another two hours for the students to ask whatever questions they are still puzzled about. At the completion of the course, the students must finish writing a course paper not less than 5000 words. The performance of the paper and the achievements of the regular participation will be regarded as the students’ final grades. II. Aims and Requirements of the Course The course aims to enable the students to gain a systematic mastery of English and Chinese poetry and their artistic values. The course offers a guideline for the students to conduct a comparative study upon English and Chinese poetry, and to seek to find their common artistic laws or models.
